Nvidia Shield TV pro and Shield TV Dongle 2020 model

We all heard rumours, we all saw some leaks but this time is official. We have the first official leaks of the two Nvidia Shield TV 2020 models that were pubblished by mistake on Amazon. And as a matter of fact we will have two different models. The first almost identical to the previous models as far as aesthetics are concerned and the second it is Nvidia’s response to the Amazon Firestick.

Nvidia Shield TV PRO 2020

Starting at $199 the brand new NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 2020 is powered by the Nvidia’s proprietary CPU, the Tegra X1+ processor. NVIDIA claims that it makes the SHIELD TV Pro 25 percent faster than its predecessor. The Tegra X1+ is now paired with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage as well.

Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2020

On the back of the New Shield TV Pro 2020 we find 2 X USB 3.0, an HDMI 2.0, a Gigabit Ethernet port and the same power in socket.

In addition to the new Tegra X1+ SoC, the SHIELD TV Pro expands the HDR support of the SHIELD TV with the inclusion of Dolby Vision HDR support along with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus. Another interesting feature is the HD to 4K upscaling using Artificial Intelligence. That is something that personally can’t wait to try since it looks very promising and this is Nvidia we are talking about.

Nvidia Shield TV Dongle

And here comes at $179 also the NVIDIA Shield TV Dongle. In a very compact device Nvidia brings the same CPU and same capabilities of the Nvidia Shield TV Pro, a part from the 2 X USB 3.0 and adds also a micro SD. Other than the AC WiFi as the bigger brother, the dongle will also have in the sam super-compact device a built-in power supply so essentialy you just need to attach the power cable to the device. Of course being a powerful device that it is, it will not be powered just by a USB cable as the Amazon Firestick. The perfomance gap is immense amaong the two devices as it is also the price.

Nvidia Shield TV Dongle

New Remote Control

Both devices share the same remote control. I was a huge fan of the first remote control. The device and build quality was top notch (especially the model with the re-chargable battery) and it was only lacking in the volume department. That touch control was cool but in all honesty not so practical. In a bold move, Nvidia decided to rebuild the remote and the design feels strange in some extent. Instead of building on top of the very loved remote they decided to play it safe while adding a lot of buttons and dedicating a button to Netflix too. This time the remote comes with AAA batteries and also supports backlight. Great the addition of a remote finder so you will never lose your remote again. I will not share more on my feelings on the remote until I use it because knowing Nvidia I believe it is better than it looks.

Nvidia Shield TV 2020 Price and Availablity

As metioned before, the two models come at a very interesting price. The Nvidia Shield TV pro sales for $199 which is the same price as the Nvidia Shield TV when it first launched 4 years ago. The Nvidia Shield TV Dongle will beat the price of the predecessor for $179 which is the price that the “old” model costs right now on Amazon. Both devices will launch on October 28th and I can’t wait to test them both. The devices were both list on Amazon but now the listing has been removed.

Google Stadia Coming To Android TV

The Google Stadia video game streaming service is set to come to the Android TV platform.

At the Game Developer Conference earlier this year, Google announced its ambitious cloud gaming service that’s cross-platform and really low-latency. At launch, you’ll be able to stream nearly 40 games at up to 4K@60 from Google’s cloud servers to 2018 or 2019 Pixel smartphones, the Google Chrome browser, or the Chromecast Ultra, though Google plans to expand support to more Android smartphones and Android TV.

Android TV Pie

Android TV roadmap in 2020 and 2021

At the International Broadcasting Convention, Google unveiled its roadmap for Android TV in 2020 and 2021. In synthesis is the following:

  • Android 11 R/2020
    • Assistant for Operators GA more partners & i18n.
    • Assistant farfield reference designs, improved x-device targeting.
    • Hero device advancing next-gen smart home UX, e.g. Lens, Camera.
    • Expand home screen and instream ads offering.
    • Stadia integration.
    • Reference video broadcast.
    • 8.0k Apps.
  • Android 12 S/2021 & beyond
    • Assistant for Operators: continuously improve quality, i18n and operator integrations.
    • Hero device program advancing next-generation.
    • Continue to lower TTM/TCO & expand monetization options.
    • Less fragmentation in HW + SW solutions, fewer builds.
    • Hold the line on memory & power, critical user journeys.
    • Continuous performance monitoring of production devices.
    • 8.0-10k Apps.

So Stadia is confirmed for Android TV too and to come to think of the Nvidia Shield TV 2019 that is expected to hit the markets soon, it all makes sense! Stadia for the Android 11 OS launch in 2020. On the current Android 10 platform instead Stadia launches in November 2019. I hope that this doesn’t change Nvidia’s plans and postpones the launch of the new Shield TV for 2020.

Bad news also is that the same TV OS update is set to “expand home screen and instream ads offering”. So more advertisements is the price to pay for convenient gaming streams. Let’s hope in a better way than the previously ad showing on some Sony TVs some months earlier this year.

More Than 10 Thousands Apps in 2021

And if you are wondering about the 8.0k Apps and 10k Apps, that is not a new resolution standard, that is Google’s prediction of the total amount of the apps that should be available on the Android TV Play Store. So that is also a very exciting move too.

Android TV comes without a Web Browser

Android TV can also be used to browse the web. Unfortunately, no browser comes pre-installed on the stock version of the operating system. Which is the best browser for Android TV? Since this is a question that a lot of people keep asking me, I’ve decided to do this video.

Best Web Browser For Android TV

Android TV is designed by Google who else have the Chrome Browser. But you will not find Chrome in an Android TV device. Even though this is a strange take from Google, we are very fortunate to have an amazing browser by a third part.
The web browser in this video is in my opinion the best web browser on Android TV. It gives you access to any website on the internet with great performance. It is also fully controlled with the remote. And can also download files on your device! What more you need from a Web Browser on Android TV to be the best?

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box Coupon

Get it from:
http://shrsl.com/1f8jr – Use the coupon DMiBoxS for a lower price $53.99 ($16 OFF!)

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box Review & Benchmark

The Xiaomi Mi Box S is the successor of the previous Android TV Box best seller, the Xiaomi Mi Box 3. The Mi Box S, also called Xiaomi Mi Box 4 in China, is an updated but yet very similar version of the previous model. It comes to fill in the gap between the NVIDIA Shield TV and the Amazon FireTV Stick. With it’s price and performance, it does exactly that. Offers a great alternative as an Android TV OS device, with a built-in ChromeCast UHD and great 4K HDR performance on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Kodi, Hulu, Youtube, Plex, etc.

The Xiaomi runs Android TV, and unlike the Android mobile OS, this particular platform doesn’t have a thousand different micro-variations depending on manufacturer. Android TV is almost identical whether you run it on a NVIDIA Shield TV or a Sony Bravia TV or as in our case, a Mi Box S. In the particular the Xiaomi Mi Box S is powered by Android 8.1.0 Oreo out of the box.

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box 8.1 Oreo

With a good score on Antutu v6, unfortunately the 3D engine of Antutu version 7 kept crashing on the Xiaomi Mi Box S. It got an average of just below 35000 and on GeekBench it scored 645 on single-core and 1804 on multi-core.

Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K HDR Android TV Box Antutu Benchmark

Great also the performance of the Dual Band WiFi 2.4G and 5G ac of the Xiaomi Box S maxing out my internet speed 180 – 20 MB.

Overall it has a great performance, superb 4K playback on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video which you have to sideload in order to install it but make sure to install the Android TV version (not the one for the mobiles). Also on KODI 18 Leia it will play any kind of format 4K UHD without issues. The response of the device is always excellent and overall you will have a more than enjoyable experience.

Shield Experience 7.2.2

A new upgrade by NVIDIA for the NVIDIA Shield TV devices (also for the Pro version). The new upgrade, as always by the amazing work from NVIDIA resolves some of the few issues the NVIDIA Shield users may face. More importantly the keyboard and mouse functionality is working now for PUBG among as other 3rd party controller issues that are now resolved for good.

In the specifics, the SHIELD Experience Software Upgrade 7.2.2 (30.7.130.7) fixes the following bugs/issues on top of the previous 7.2.1 upgrade.

Shield Experience 7.2.2

New Enhancements/Fixes:

• Fixes Keyboard/Mouse functionality for PUBG Mobile
• Fixes bug where colors are displayed incorrectly on Chrome/Puffin browsers
• Resolves storage quota issues when transferring files from PC to SHIELD
• Fixes issue where Dualshock 3 controller would not pair properly over Bluetooth
• Fixes issue affecting original Xbox One wired controller functionality
• Resolves issues where PLEX would not access content on NAS
• Addresses issues where NAS would not manually mount correctly
• Resolves bug where PLEX was not detecting Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD 1590
• Fixes bug where home screen is displayed while mounting network storage
• Fixes bug where Dynamic range advanced display setting was not working
• Improves network connectivity when connecting to router through local DNS or gateway
• Resolves issue where Sling app would not be available
• [Beta] Adds setting to automatically switch color modes (Settings > Developer Options > Colorimetry).

Known issues:

• Rare cases where system appears to hang on startup
• [SHIELD 2015 and SHIELD Pro] Rare cases of SD Card not recognized
• [SHIELD Pro] Accessory UI not present on pairing screen after factory reset
• Rare cases where USB drive is ejected.
• Some TV/Receivers may wake up after ~30 seconds after SHIELD sleeping
• Green line displayed at the bottom/right with specific content aspect ratio
• HDCP issues with specific TV models (Bauhn ATV65UHD-1217)
• Plex video playback from NAS takes 30 seconds to start.

The NVIDIA SHIELD TV is now available to buy in a new bundle which delivers more on the Android TV device’s smart home capabilities. The main difference is the inclusion of a Samsung’s SmartThings Link dongle. The NVIDIA SHIELD TV Smart Home Edition is available to buy now from Amazon, and is priced at $219.99 in the US.

The SmartThings Link usb dongle for the NVIDIA SHIELD became available in late 2017, and so in reality this is not a new product. But now the bundle is listed on the official NVIDIA site allowing future owners to buy the products together instead of getting them separately. Truth be told, there doesn’t seem to be any financial incentive buying the bundle, as it’s priced exactly as the cost of the items if purchased separately. So for now this more of a convenience bundle, than anything else.

What makes SmartThings Link different is its size, as it is just a USB dongle that can be plugged into the back of the SHIELD as a usual USB dongle. Once done and connected, the SmartThings Link immediately becomes a smart hub for the home, allowing SHIELD owners the option to control and manage multiple smart devices (lights, outlets and more) from the SmartThings Link, in other words from the SHIELD Android TV. You can see a full list of all the supported products here: https://www.smartthings.com/products.

So, for who is it for then? Well this bundle is specifically designed for those people who are looking for an immediate solution for both Android TV and a Smart Home Hub. Similar to the FireTV Cube by Amazon, with more power and fully compatible with Alexa. You can also buy each piece separately. In fact, as of right now the “SHIELD TV Gaming Edition” is selling curently for $179.99  (you actually get the gamepad for FREE!). Then you can always add on the $39.99 price for the SmartThings Link, the total comes in at $219.98 – the same cost as the Smart Home Edition which does not inclue with the NVIDIA Shield TV gamepad.

HOW TO INCREASE INTERNAL STORAGE ON NVIDIA SHIELD TV, very easy tutorial! All the SHIELD TV users can increase their internal storage space for apps and games by setting up USB drives (hard disk drives or flash drives through USB 3.0) or even SD Cards to replace their current internal storage.

The process is really easy and is worth doing in order to get the most out of your NVIDIA Shield TV.

The Samsung SD Card I have used in this tutorial can be bought for a very low price from: https://goo.gl/r5Sz8t
